The Old Ship Inn, Cawsand – back from the ashes....
A burnt out pub in the heart of the village, taken into community ownership in 2018 with the intention of providing housing for local people and a vibrant community space.
Phase 1 is complete - We brought the property with a mixture of funding grants and community shares, made it structurally safe and built a temporary community space, with a fully equiped commercial kitchen and cafe area.
Phase 2 - The original timeline has been impacted by the pandemic and knock on impacts on funding and capacity - however our aims and intentions for the Old Ship are still the same, to build affordable flats and make the ground floor bar/cafe and heritage centre permanent. Right now we are working to review the business and funding model and will share further information as soon as we have it.
In the meantime, here are ways that you can currently support what is happening at the Old Ship:
Visit the Community Cafe - open Mondays & Thursdays from 10am - 1pm
A fabulous group of volunteers run the regular cafe sessions - join us for drinks and tasty cakes and do your bit to help keep the Old Ship going. Cafe Abundance join us on a Thursday - so pop in to save some low-cost groceries from landfill!
Come to Community events
There are a number of one-off community fundraising events at the Old Ship. Previous events include a Tapas evening, Ship Sunday socials, Supper Clubs, curry nights and more! Please follow our Facebook page @oldshipcawsand to see whats hapenning.
Hire the space for your events
The Old Ship (including its fully equiped commercial kitchen) is available to hire for one off or regular pop up events, private functions, meetings, testing out your new business idea - we will try to accomodate your needs. The more than this beautiful space can be used, the better!

Gazebo Hire
We have a 3m x 3m gazebo available for hire if you need one! Just email info@oldshipcawsand.org.uk to arrange collection and return to the Old Ship - donations welcome in return for hire.
How the first phase of the Old Ship was funded
We raised over £130,000 through community shares. People who wanted to support the Old Ship brought shares and become co-owners as members of The Peninsula Trust, a Charitable Community Benefit Society.
We also received funding from the Plunkett Foundation, Cornwall Council Land Remediation Fund, the Coast Revival Fund, EU Leader fund, Cornwall Community Foundation and The National Lottery's Awards For All Fund. We also received finance from Co-operative and Community Finance.
